A Walk Through Time

Pioneer Families

Richard John and Ann Graer left Wales in the 1850,s with their five children to seek a better life in North America. The family first immigrated to Pennsylvania where Richard worked in the coal mines. Hearing about the discovery of gold on the Fraser River in New Caledonia (now British Columbia) the family moved west, and arrived in Victoria in 1858. In 1863, he settled his family on 600 acres of land he purchased and named "Glamorgan Farm". For the next ten years he mined at Yale and Barkerville, and finally settled down to farming, until he passed away in 1892 and later Ann in 1907
